The launch of Disney+ had a few snags during its initial rollout, with more subscribers signing on to the new steaming platform than were initially expected. As the kinks begin to be ironed out, it looks as though Disney+ will provide a host of wonderful options from the worlds of classic and contemporary Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, National Geographic, including many original films and series to enjoy. For those of us who love musicals (film, television, and stage), there are also plentiful offerings, some newer, but most that hold a place of nostalgia in our hearts. Here are some standouts that you can hope to find!
As the weather begins to warm, bringing an end to winter’s frosty reign, I revel in the smell of impending summer. The aroma of tilled earth in a rainstorm, the gentle whiff of lilacs or jasmine, the songs of crickets and peepers filling the night. When this feeling of summer’s arrival washes over me, another item always comes to mind: Walt Disney Pictures film Summer Magic.
Walt Disney had a lot of hit films in his career. Indeed, many of the films made in his lifetime ranked in the top-five movies of the year that they were released. After his death, however, many of the films that followed fell into what is considered a mediocre time of the studio where projects seemed either aimless, or did not have that Disney stamp of excellence. The last project that Walt Disney green-lit was the live-action 1967 musical The Happiest Millionaire. It is interesting to think what the final product would have looked like had Disney survived to infuse it with his special brand of magic. Woefully, he did not and the final product is one of the biggest duds the studio has ever churned out. That is not to say that The Happiest Millionaire doesn’t have little bursts of excellence within its overly long original 164 minute running time.
