Broadway Showtunes that Share a Title

This might seem like a ridiculous subject for a piece about Broadway showtunes, but the more I thought about it, the more fascinated I became by the subject. In songwriting, there is no copyright on titles, so titles can repeat. I can sit down and write a song about Broadway and remembering fondly, then title it “Give My Regards to Broadway.” As long as the music and lyrics are different, it is perfectly acceptable (and legal) to do so. This got me thinking: what showtunes are there that share the same title? It turns out, there are several. Here is a sampling of some that I found.

"Revue"-ing the Situation: Musical Revues in the Spotlight

I started out writing this piece, intending to explore all styles of musical revues, the "best of" the genre. I soon realized that, if I didn't apply certain parameters, I'd be writing until the end of time. So, I set some rules: the musical revues that I would discuss had to have original music, not an assemblage of showtunes such as in And the World Goes 'Round, or be composed of radio hits a la Smokey Joe's Café. Both are fine revues, but I decided I wanted to concentrate on the pieces that were written, from conception, as original revues. Here are some of my favorites to listen to and read about.

Summer Lovin’: Broadway Songs that Celebrate and Capture Summer

Though there is a little over a month of actual calendar summer left, we all know that the department stores are packed with school supplies, school clothes, and the “Back-to-School Sale” banners fill their windows. For all intents and purposes, we have a few fleeting weeks left to enjoy the sunshine and the leisure that summer affords. In an effort to make the most of these few weeks, I have assembled a playlist of Broadway songs that celebrate summer.
